Charter Season: November Through July

The Best Time to Sail the BVI — Month by Month

Trade winds, temperature, rainfall, crowds, and charter rates all vary through the year. Here's the honest guide to every month of the BVI sailing season.

The BVI is a year-round destination in theory — but some months are dramatically better than others. Here's what Captain Gino knows after years of sailing these waters.

Day by Day

Month by Month

Early Season — Value & Wind
Trade winds return in November and strengthen through December. Fewer crowds, better rates on charter weeks, and the same conditions as peak season. Christmas week fills up early — book this one well in advance.
⭐⭐
Peak Season — Best Conditions
The sweet spot. Consistent 15-20 knot trade winds, low humidity, minimal rainfall, calm seas. The most reliable sailing of the year. Prices and demand are at their highest — but for good reason.
⭐⭐
Spring — Still Excellent
Trade winds remain strong through March and April. Temperatures are warming but not yet hot. Crowds thin out after school spring breaks. April is particularly good value for the conditions it delivers.
Shoulder Season — Quiet & Warm
May is quieter and warmer. Trade winds are still present but less consistent. Humidity begins to climb. Good value, fewer boats at popular anchorages, and still plenty of great sailing days.
🌦️
Late Season — Hot & Humid
June and July are the last months of Aquanimity's charter season. Warmer, more humid, and more cloud cover. Trade winds ease. Perfectly fine for sailing but conditions are less predictable than winter months.
Hurricane Season — We Don't Sail
Aquanimity does not charter August through October. This is the genuine risk window for tropical systems in the BVI. We take the boat out of harm's way. Book November onward for the next season.

Common Questions

FAQ

December through February offers the most reliable conditions — steady 15-20 knot trade winds from the east, low humidity, minimal rainfall, and calm seas. Many experienced sailors consider January the single best month to be in the BVI.
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. However, the real risk window in the BVI is August through October. Aquanimity does not charter during August, September, or October for this reason.
Yes — April is excellent. Trade winds are still reliable, temperatures are warming but not yet hot, and the charter crowds start to thin out. It's one of the best value months of the season.
July is the last month of Aquanimity's charter season. Trade winds begin to ease, temperatures are higher, and humidity increases. Sailing is still enjoyable and the BVI is quieter, but conditions are less predictable than winter months.
The BVI receives more rainfall June through August, mostly in the form of brief tropical showers that pass quickly. These months see more cloud cover than the winter peak season, but sustained bad weather is uncommon in June and July.
