Soft-sided bags. Full stop. This is the single most practical piece of advice for first-time charter guests.

Why hard suitcases do not work

Hard-shell suitcases are designed for hotels, not boats. Below deck, storage areas are shaped to the hull — curved, narrow, and often accessed through hatches or under berths. A rigid suitcase does not compress, does not fold, and takes up more room than it should. On a boat with six guests sharing limited storage, hard luggage creates real problems.

What actually works

• Soft duffel bags — the ideal choice. They compress when empty, fit into irregular spaces, and can be stowed completely out of the way once you have unpacked.
• Soft-sided rolling bags — acceptable, though the wheels add unnecessary rigidity and weight.
• Backpacks — great as a second bag for day items, snorkel gear, and anything you want accessible on deck.

How much to bring

One medium duffel bag per person is plenty for a seven-night trip. You will spend most of the week in swimsuits. You do not need options. Pack less than you think you need and you will be glad you did.

Where luggage is stored

Once you have unpacked into your cabin, your bag gets stowed under the berth or in the cabin storage lockers. It stays there for the week. If your bag does not fit in those spaces, it will be in your way.
