What if I get seasick on a catamaran charter?

It is one of the most common concerns we hear from guests considering their first charter, and the good news is that it almost never becomes a real problem in the British Virgin Islands.

The BVI waters are unusually calm

The passages between islands in the BVI are short — typically one to three hours — and the anchorages are protected from ocean swells. You are not crossing open water. Most sailing legs feel more like a gentle ride than anything that would cause discomfort.

A catamaran specifically is significantly more stable than a monohull sailboat. The wide platform between the two hulls creates a level, comfortable ride that most guests find genuinely pleasant rather than disorienting.

Come prepared anyway

If you have experienced motion sickness in the past or simply want peace of mind, bring Dramamine, Bonine, or another over-the-counter motion sickness medication. Sea-Bands (acupressure wristbands) also work well for many people. Take your medication before departure rather than waiting to feel ill.

The crew typically carries medication onboard as well, so if you forget yours, just ask.

What helps in the moment

If you ever feel uncomfortable while underway, the best thing to do is sit on deck in the open air, look at the horizon, and stay out of the cabin. Fresh air and a fixed focal point on the horizon are the most effective natural remedies.

Most guests are genuinely surprised at how smooth and comfortable the sailing actually is.
